A party planning checklist is an essential element of a successful party. If this is something you’ve been told you should create, but didn’t think it was really necessary, think again. It is your number one line of attack against being overwhelmed by the seemingly never-ending list of tasks to accomplish.

If you’ve never created a checklist for any of your parties before, there’s no time like the present to start one. The first step is to jot down what you think you need to accomplish between now and the day of the big event. You should also enter the timing of when those tasks need to be completed. However, not all parties require you to create a detailed list with deadlines.

For example, if you were throwing an impromptu get-together with your friends, and you were doing a Mexican-themed party, with Mexican food and margaritas, you would want to make a list of everything you needed from the store. But, you don’t need to add any kind of timing to your list.

Granted, this is an oversimplification of what goes into planning a party, but you get the idea. The list will help you to remember everything you need for your party in order for it to be as successful as possible.

When creating a party planning checklist for a really important event, like someone’s 50th wedding anniversary or a retirement party, there are two extremely important items you need to have on that checklist before anything else: the budget and the guest list.

The budget is important because it can determine how your party will take shape. Figuring out your budget before any planning will save you time, and of course, it will save you money. It can narrow down the choices for the menu, the location, the drinks you’ll serve, the decorations, the location, and the number of people you invite.

The guest list is the next item you should put down on your party planning checklist. It, like the budget, is important to determine early on in the party planning process. And, If you were smart, you already figured out your budget, so you should have an idea of how many people you can afford to invite.

The guest list is a driving factor in deciding such things as the menu and style of meal you will be having. For example, if you have more than ten people on your list, you can probably rule out a five-course sit-down meal, especially if you’re preparing the meal yourself. You also have a pretty good idea as to how many people you can fit comfortably in your house, so the guest list will tell you if you can have the party there, or not.

The budget and the guest list are two essential items to include on your party planning checklist. These two should be the first two items you add because they both can narrow down the focus of your party. The order of what you accomplish on your list isn’t as important as making sure you have one. Keeping track of what you need to do versus what’s been done already will help you plan a successful party that everyone will enjoy.
