Pretty sure Declan McManus called Brother Ray a “House N****r, just like every other whore in R N’ B.”
When did EC proclaim himself a purist, BTW?

I too hear echoes of Abbey Road at the end of Party Girl, but not from I Want You. I think it’s from She Came In Through the Bathroom Window. Check out the guitar riff just after “…one sweet dream, came true, today….”

Gotta love that I Want You (She’s So Heavy) nod in the coda.

@nrthdude1 You got the story a little wrong. Costello referred to Ray Charles as a stupid, blind nigger in a Columbus, OH bar. Singer Bonnie Bramlett immediately punched Costello. The next day Costello apologized stating he was drunk.
Also, Costello won a Grammy for his debut album, My Aim Is True, before Ronstandt covered any of his songs. Later, Costello said about Ronstadt recording his songs, “that fucking cunt ruined my songs.”

Wow. She must have been some kind of woman.

I’m still playing my vinyl Armed Forces album on a regular basis! I’d always heard this song was about Bebe Buell (Liv Tyler’s mum).

Yes, some of the best bass playing out there. My son is a bassist and was steeped in Elvis C. Regarding Linda Ronstadt, the best song on that pretty decent Mad Love album is White Rhythm and Blues. Also, Elvis writes songs, Linda sings them only. Enough said. By the way, My Aim is True (1977/78) was Rolling Stone record of the year, so Linda didn’t put Elvis on the charts.

this song is one of the big reasons that any bass player should know about EC + the attractions

Linda Ronstadt recorded Costello’s songs in the late 70s putting him on the rock & pop charts.
Elvis thanked her by saying the only bad thing about his songs was that Ronstadt sang them. He went on to call Ray Charles a whore.
Alternative music fans & critics applauded Costello’s “purist” remarks.
Ronstadt left rock & pop music and recorded uncommercial Mexican, folk & Cuban music.
“Purist” Costello went on to record albums with commercial pop stars Hall & Oates and Paul McCartney.

Truly one of the greatest songs ever. Love it. Thank you very much Declan.

Love those lyrics – all the double meanings.

See her album from 1980 Mad Love for EC’s Party Girl, Girl’s Talk and Talking in the Dark. I think they’re pretty good, not great but kind of interesting. She of course also did Alison back on her ‘78 album, Living in the USA.

I had no idea. Gotta find that.

Great song…..guess that’s why Linda Ronstadt recorded it long ago. Great lyrics.

That does open up some exciting visual ideas now too.

I do now! Thank you! Your input on E.C. is invaluable. It shall be done if there is a rework.

Since it did not get the axe by Universal Music Group I’d like to add in more sequential art to go along with the lyrics.

That characature of Elvis is hilarious! Great song also. Mebbe he could buy the party girl a watch, then he could give her time! WOO HOO!!!!!!!

Not vise, it’s vice. “In a grip-like vice.” Geddit? He was an inveterate punster.
TonyTuthill on March 6, 2010 at 6:18 pm
Wow. Had never thought about it that way! It works for me. I can not give them (Party Girls) time either. I just do not want to get involved this go round. If I do it will be for Ron Paul.
aimtrue45 on March 6, 2010 at 7:13 pm
I always thought “Party Girl” was a reference to political fanatics rather than social situations. The double entendre fits into the theme of Armed Forces. Great song.
