One important part of dinner party planning that often gets overlooked are the invitations. Most planners put all of their time into coming up with a menu, guest list, and style. It’s important to taking your dinner party planning one step further by ensuring your invitations are created properly.

The most important function of the invitation is to get tell you guests the who, what, when, and where of the party. They also act as an attention grabber. They are almost like your sales letter to your potential guests. If you have a stylish invitation, there’s no way they will want to say “no” to your party.

The essentials, like the who, when, what, and where, aren’t just for a dinner party. Planning the invitations for a kid’s party, holiday party, graduation party, or engagement party will include similar information.

The first piece of information you need to let your intended guests know who is having the party. I’m sure they know by the return address, but it doesn’t hurt to spell it out for them right of the bat on your invitation.

The next piece is to tell them the purpose of your party. Since this article is focusing on dinner parties, you should let them know that they are being invited to a dinner party.

Some people try to get cute with this by having their guest list guess the purpose from the design of the invitation. Don’t be one of those people. Simply state the fact that you’re having a dinner party right at the beginning of your invitation so there’s no confusion.

After that, you tell your guest list the date and time of your party. Make sure the date includes the day, month, and year, and the time includes A.M. or P.M. Now, since you’ve already specifically stated on the invitation that this is a dinner party (you did remember to state that fact, didn’t you?), P.M. is implied. However, it doesn’t hurt to state it on the invitation anyway.

Now, your invitation should tell everyone where the party is being held. More than likely it will be at your house, but don’t assume everyone will know that just because it’s a dinner party. Also, if there are some guests who may not know the location very well, include a map.

The last piece of essential information you want to make sure you include is your R.S.V.P. information. I don’t know about you, but I’m constantly receiving invitations to parties without it. Most of the time it’s from one of my friends, so it’s no big deal. Always give people a way to contact you in case they can’t come to your party.

There are some other items you can add to your invitation that aren’t necessary, but they can add to the guests understanding of what your party is all about. You can tell them how to dress. If it’s a dinner party, you can let them know how formal their attire should be. You can let them know the type of food that will be served. If you decide to throw a theme on top of your dinner party idea, let them know that.

It’s important to remember not the overlook the invitations when you are putting together your dinner party. Planning one without proper invitations almost feels like you are only going through a partial process. Making sure your invitations have the essential pieces of information mentioned in this article will tell your guests that you have your act together and that you want them to attend.

Having a child on the Autism spectrum has caused me to think about situations that others may not. For instance, because she is on a gluten-free diet, I need to be very thoughtful when planning any kind of party, or sending her to any kind of party. Kids party planning is hard enough without the added bonus of trying to keep her safe from certain types of foods.

It is a lot easier to plan your child’s birthday party because you will be in charge of the food, so you know exactly what is going into your child’s mouth. The difficult situation is they attend one of their friend’s birthday parties. In this case, the control is in someone else’s hands. It is understandable to be worried in situations like this, but there are steps you can take to ease some of those worries.

The first thing you need to do is talk to the parents of the child having the party. Because restricted diets are a lot more common now than they used to be, I’m sure the parent won’t look at you like you’re an alien from another planet. Explain to them why your child is on a gluten-free diet, and the potential harm it could do to them.

During your discussion, find out what type of foods they will be serving at the party. Even though more people are becoming aware of gluten-free diets, they often don’t know what foods contain gluten. When they tell you what they are planning for the party, let them know which foods contain gluten.

Offer to bring the gluten-free alternatives for your son. As you probably already know, there are fabulous gluten-free recipes available that your child has probably already had at his own birthday parties. This will take some of the pressure off of the host because they won’t have to worry about accidentally preparing some gluten-free recipe improperly, and making your son sick. It will also free them up to worry about the food for the majority of the kids at the party.

Another important thing will be making sure there isn’t any cross-contamination of typical foods with your son’s foods. Cleaning hands and utensils between handling typical foods and gluten-free foods is necessary, and the host should know this. One way to ensure this is done is to offer to help at the party. Most parents will not hesitate to have an extra set of hands assisting at the party, especially when there is a child with special dietary needs.

Another way to have your child avoid the gluten-filled foods at the party is to get him nice and full before you send him to it. He’ll be less tempted by the food that’s bad for him if his belly is filled with food that is good for him.

Kids party planning should be about fun, not worry. The next time you send your child to a party, keep your worries in check by having a conversation with the parents of the child throwing the party. If they know your child’s situation, there is less of a chance of any diet slip-ups occurring. This accomplishes two things: your child will be safe and you will be able to send your child to the party worry-free.

My bridesmaids brought up going to Vegas the weekend before the wedding, and we went. It was a lot of fun, but really disorganized. My MOH didn’t step up to organize it because it was actually my college roommates that suggested it (4 of them were bridesmaids). It was a really fun weekend, but there was nothing distinctly “bachelorette” about it.

Should I have stepped up to organize it? I read a lot on here about brides organizing their own party. Is that common?
Oh no, I was not disappointed…it was great. I am just wondering if I was supposed to do something for it.

Let’s talk about party planning software. I recommend it to many clients and friends. Do you currently have a dedicated version? If not, do you have anything that could work as a suitable substitute?

There are many pieces of software I’m sure you have that you didn’t even realize could masquerade as party planning software. In this article, we’ll explore using the tools you have, so you can have the benefit of party planning software without spending additional money.

I’ve endured many protests from clients and friends of mine whenever the subject of party planning software comes up. So many people refuse to purchase something that they won’t use every day.

I’d argue with them that they should used it for more than just the milestone parties, like anniversaries and retirement parties, but sometimes it’s like reasoning with child who really doesn’t want to eat his vegetables: they just won’t no matter what you say.

I’m the type of person who can’t wing a party; I can’t not throw all of my planning finesse at it. That’s why I think it’s extremely important to have some sort of party planning software to help you out. If you don’t want to purchase something extra, adapting the tools you already have is the best alternative.

The best option is Excel. A lot of computers these days come with Excel loaded on them. With this software, you can create charts, graphs, and calendars. The multitudes of mathematical functions available on Excel make it an especially good budget tracker.

If Excel isn’t already loaded on your computer, you can make due with Word. It doesn’t have anything close to the functionality of Excel, but you have some of the same abilities as Excel; you can format data into Word tables and use some of the basic addition and subtraction functions. I’d like to caution you, however, that the learning curve is pretty steep for getting the Word tables to look and act similar to Excel tables.

For a calendar, you can use the application that comes with most cell phones. With it you can schedule and track your appointments associated with your party planning. You can also schedule reminders about payments and dates when you need to complete various phases of your planning.

Is all of this talk about Excel and Word over your head, and do computers tend to freak you out? If so, you really should devote some time and catch up with technology. There’s only going to be more coming in years to come, so you may as well start learning now. Okay, enough lecturing…

Do yourself, and anyone else involved with your parties, use party planning software. If you can afford to purchase real software, use what you have. Even if it is based on programs you already have at your disposal, it will make all the difference in creating fantastic events.

Party Planning Statistics?

We are hosting a party for 300 people. We are planning to server finger foods. How much should we budget per person to insure that people don’t leave hungry. How much beef, chicken, veggies, pasta, etc. Are there rules of thumb, ratios, averages we should use?
